8-Bit Minute: Overwatch Free Weekend

A couple weeks ago, Blizzard let loose their latest and loudest I.P., Overwatch, for a free-to-play weekend. A quick look at OW's wrap sheet is all you'll likely need to understand my decision to skip this one - online only, multiplayer, first-person shooter? Pass.
But that was before literally* everyone I know became completely obsessed with the game. Before I knew it, I was drowning in Overwatch media - comics, backstories, animated short films and endless discussion of the game. I quickly became the Guinness World Record holder for Person Who Knows the Most About Overwatch Without Ever Actually Playing It*.
So when Blizzard released the game for a free weekend on PSN, I was out of excuses. I had to play Overwatch. So how'd it go?

Kicking Gnomes: 1947

Is anybody out there?
One guy?
Eh, that's good enough for me!

Hey that one guy! Long time, no see. 2016 is shaping up to be the worst year of my gaming life but oh well. This is the best I can do for now, so you're getting another crappy pickups article. I'm pretty sure I was supposed to post this... spring? summer? maybe? 1947? I can't keep up anymore! But it's probably for the best anyway, 'cause I'm not so sure there's going to be very many of these going forward. After my last post, I've put a lot of thought into my collecting habits and decided they're probably going to slow down considerably for now. I know myself well enough to know there's still going to be plenty of purchases, but probably not enough to warrant seasonal Kicking Gnomes. But we'll see! I have a habit of saying "I'm done" with something and then quickly changing my mind, but for this year, this is probably gonna be it. So let's enjoy our sweet, sweet time together.

8-Bit Minute: Game Collection

There's something that's been on my mind quite a bit lately. It's kinda bothering me, in fact. Then while walking my dog, catching up with the Rad Rascals, they brought up the very topic that's been causing me so much plight lately and it just opened up a whole new can of worms on me, and I spent the rest of the night crying to my other half  'cause I don't know what to do with myself.
Guys, I think I've entered my mid-life crisis.

That's A Wrap: Uncharted 4: A Thief's End

warning: may contain spoilers

The time has finally - FINALLY - come. Even though I'm publishing this weeks after its release, I've been waiting for this game for many years and many delays, not only because I'm a die hard Uncharted fan, but because I've been waiting for this title to come out before I bought a PS4. Now armed with both, I venture into this bittersweet journey with high hopes. It's kinda funny… I really can't win: if it's a great game, I have to go on living with the understanding that this is, in fact, the last Uncharted game I'll have the pleasure of playing (so says developer Naughty Dog). And if it sucks? I'm going to be bloody pissed! Regardless, I haven't been this excited for a new game in a long time, and I'm going into this with massive hype!

My first thoughts on U4 were, it looks like an Uncharted, it sounds like an Uncharted, it's written like an Uncharted, it plays exactly like an Uncharted… this is, beyond a shadow of a doubt, the next installment in the Uncharted series. But we knew that… my point is: Naughty Dog didn't make the same mistake as so many other developers and take this opportunity to completely ruin their flagship franchise by switching everything up and adding loads of unnecessary crap. The beauty of Uncharted has always been the way it looks and the story it tells, and while U4 is highly polished, experienced Uncharted players will not even need the tutorials. The game feels right at home in the dog house. Several chapters into the game, I still had a great big smile on my face, and was still cursing like a mad man when I couldn't make a jump or died a cheap death. It's Drake's Fortune on PS3 all over again, just… prettier.

The E3 Blog: 2016

Oh man. It feels like such a long time since I've done this! So this is my annual (for real, not like my Game Over series) written coverage of E3 (Electronic Entertainment Expo), the E3 Blog. If you haven't seen one of these before, basically I watch the major press conferences at E3 (sans PC game show), North America's largest convention for gaming and game electronics, and log my thoughts in real time, with no additional research (I try to ignore pre-E3 rumors, as well). It's tough to keep up, especially since I decided to get my nails done the week before (slows down my WPM tenfold), so I'm a little all over the place, but hopefully you get the gist of things!
This year featured press junkets from regulars EA, Ubisoft, Microsoft (Xbox) and Sony (Playstation), as well as a victory lap for Bethesda and a half-assed something-or-other from Nintendo. Evidently EA drew the short straw, so we're getting them out of the way first. Let's go!

Game Binge - Episode Four [PS+ EDITION]

I've been subscribed to PS Plus for a few years now, and while I agree it's a wonderful service for Playstation gamers, you do tend to get a little overwhelmed by free games. I've had a few dozen games just sitting on my hard drive for some time now, and I decided it was time to clear them out. But before I erase and likely forget about them forever, I thought it might be bright to play a few minutes of some and get an idea of which ones I'll devote my full attention to someday. It's been a while since I've done a game binge anyway! Let me know what you think of these PSN titles!

The Elite Four: Nostalgic Games

Once again, I'm stealing content from the YouTube sector of the Cartridge Club. This particular topic seems to have stemmed from one of our more recent adoptions, whom we call Musty! The idea is to name your top five nostalgic games - not favorite games, not rare games, no even most fun games - but the games that illicit the strongest memories of days gone by. This list was especially awkward for me to form because it works against everything I am as a gamer. No RPG's and only ONE genesis title?! What's goin' on here?! Let's have a look at my Top 5 Most Nostalgic Games.

Kicking Gnomes: Winter 2015

Back in the saddle! Maybe. I'm trying, here, people… go easy on me. I figured I should get y'all up to speed on all the crap I've acquired over the winter months, even though I can't remember them all myself. That's a good sign, right? Lotsa stuff? Ah, who knows.
I have no idea what I've done digitally as of late. I know I perused a fair few PSN sales and perhaps the eShop once or twice, but I don't recall if I bought anything! I've been deliberately trying to avoid digital buys because I find it discourages me from capitalizing on opportunities to buy physical copies, which is what I really want. And I did snag a couple cool things! Have a look:

Fuck you, books are cool.
