8-Bit Minute: PS4 Wish List

If you've been paying attention, you'll have noticed a distinct lack of new gen games on ATSG. Of the three "current" home consoles, the only one I've managed to acquire is the WiiU, but anyone who knows me will tell you I'm no stranger to Playstation or Xbox, so what's up, Lo?!

The truth is: I've a long-time habit of waiting a year or two after the release of a major console before picking it up. The reasons are probably obvious: the units get smaller, the hard drives get bigger, the problems are fewer, the bundles are more plentiful and the prices usually drop. While I appreciate what "day one" buyers do for the industry, I'm just not interested in being a part of that crowd. Upon announcement, I was quick to reduce the Xbox One to "least important" on my list, but I could have told you right from the get-go that there's a PS4 in my future.
The time is getting near… the PS4 has a great selection of titles now and many more on the way. So what am I waiting for?! I'll tell ya, but while I'm at it, here's a quick "wish list" of all the titles (so far) that I'm hoping to get for PS4.

So here's the deal: it's no secret that I love Uncharted. Uncharted was among the first games I played on PS3, and my first PSVita game, too! So in addition to simply being excited for Uncharted 4: A Thief's End, I'm kinda stuck on this idea of it being my first PS4 game, too. In fact, I'd planned to have my PS4 and U4 already, but the game got delayed, and I started pouring money into other things (have you seen my Kicking Gnomes articles, lately?) and I'm still just hung up on the idea of playing U4 first. So the plan is still the same: buy a PS4 when Uncharted comes out. U4 is expected March 18 2016, but that's okay! I've got plenty to keep me busy until then!
And before you say it: yes, I'm aware of the Nathan Drake Collection bundle. But I've already got those game for PS3, so I'm really not super motivated to played them again on PS4 right now. Furthermore, I'm kind of hoping for a U4 bundle, when the time comes… please please please!

So what else?
I've been putting off Diablo III for a loooooooooong time. I loved the other Diablo games but it's been a long time for me and when I do jump in, I really want the best possible experience. I know it's an old title now but I'll likely wait on Diablo until PS4. I wonder if I'll still have anyone to play with?

I've mentioned here and there that one of my goals for 2015 was to get back into Disgaea. So far I haven't made good on that resolution, but if need be, I can push it to next year. I've already heard such great things from my fellow Disgaea fans, so I'm super excited now! I've actually got big plans for Disgaea and ATSG, and I'm sure I'll find my motivation again once I get Disgaea 5 for PS4.

A series that I've paid significantly less attention to is Dragon Age, but a lot of chatter still goes on about Dragon Age: Inquisition, so I reckon I'll have to give this a go someday. I should probably play the others through first though, huh? What say you, Dragon Age fans?

Another series I've been faithful to for a very, very, very long time is Dragon Quest. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little concerned for the future of this series, especially since so much of it has been withheld from America lately. But from what I hear, we will be getting Dragon Quest Heroes over here (very soon in fact)! I'm certainly intrigued, and while I'll definitely be late to the party, hopefully this will be a good experience on PS4.

One of the most outstanding showings for me at 2014's E3 was Far Cry 4. I was so impressed by this game's introduction that I wanted it then! But again, I opted to wait until I had the bigger, badder hardware to run it, so I've held off. Sadly, I don't hear people talking too much about FC4 anymore. I hope that's not a reflection of the game's quality 'cause I was really impressed with what I saw. I'll have to see for myself.

And one of the first big titles released for PS4 was Infamous: Second Son. It's old news now, but at the time people really seemed to enjoy it and speak highly of it. The Infamous games have always been fun to screw around in, and while this one doesn't appear to continue directly on from the others, I'm still game for checking it out. I wonder if it's as narrative-heavy as it seems (I kind of hope so).

More recently, game fans have been rejoicing over Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. I'm a long time Metal Gear fan and definitely interested in closing the gap on my MGS collection with this bad boy. Everyone I know is completely blown away by it, but I'm actually a bit worried. I don't feel like MG games have ever been this big or long before, and I can't help but feel like that's gonna hurt it a bit. But we'll see! I definitely need to check it out, anyway.

Another title that piqued my interest is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. I've spoken before about my experiences with the Witcher and why I'm poised to dive into this one, and my attention continues to be revived every time the guys from the Rad Rascals podcast discuss it. So far I've heard it's fun, if imperfect, but every gamer is different and I tend to have a little more patience than others when it comes to RPGs, so I'm ready for this one!

I know it's not out just yet, but it should come as no surprise to any of you that I'm pretty stoked for Tales of Zestiria. I'm a big fan of Tales games so I absolutely intend to play this one on PS4. Oddly, the things I've heard about Zestiria are doing more to delay me than excite me, and once again I'm worried Tales is slowly going the way of other favorite Japanese RPGs of mine. I really hope they make up for the over simplicity with classic Tales gameplay. They've also already announced the next installment of the Tales series, Berseria, and in a weird turn of events, I may actually be more excited for that one...

In spite of having not played the previous titles, I'm totally on the bandwagon for Fallout 4. Bethesda completely sold me on this one at E3 this year. I'll probably force myself to check out Fallout 3 first, but 4 is also on my radar for PS4.

Looking over this list just now, I realize that all the games I've just mentioned are sequels. That breaks my heart a little. I know there are many more titles on the way, and there are definitely some pickups among them, but these are the titles that are released or will be shortly that I'm already sold on. There a few other titles that I'm not 100% sure on just yet, such as Alien: Isolation, Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag (I have a thing for ships and pirates), Bloodborne and Until Dawn. Everyone seems to have mixed opinions about these games and I'm just not sure they're for me, but I'll put more effort into finding out once I have the hardware I want to play them on.

So this 8-bit Minute turned out to be awfully long… sorry 'bout that. But how do you feel about my list? Are you enjoying any of these games? What other releases are you excited for? Help me get pumped for PS4 (even though I won't have one 'til March)!

  1. Now that we have a PS4, many if not all of these titles will be on our wish list too. Uncharted 4 is at the top for me ;)
